Twins, professional baseball team and one of five teams in the Central
Division of the American League (AL). Named for Minnesota’s
Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, the club plays at the Hubert
H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis and wears white pinstriped uniforms
with red trim. The franchise originated as the Washington Senators,
a club that joined the American League at the time of the league’s
formation in 1901.
The
Minnesota Twins reached the playoffs three times from 1961 to 1970,
during the franchise’s first 10 years. The Twins first won
the World Series in 1987. The club won another Series title in 1991.
Both championship teams were led by manager Tom Kelly and perennial
.300 hitter and All-Star outfielder Kirby Puckett.
Two
of the greatest Twins players were slugger Harmon Killebrew and
line-drive hitter Rod Carew. Killebrew won six AL home run titles
and ranks in the top ten on the all-time home run list with 573.
Carew, recognized as the best pure hitter of his day, won seven
league batting crowns and compiled a career .328 average—among
the best averages recorded in the second half of the 20th century.
The
Twins joined the league in 1961 when, despite pleas from the Congress
of the United States and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, AL officials
reluctantly allowed Washington Senators owner Calvin Griffith to
relocate his club to Minneapolis. Sam Mele was named manager in
1961 and in 1965 led the Twins to the AL pennant with sluggers Harmon
Killebrew, Tony Oliva and Zoilo Versalles. Minnesota’s hitters,
however, succumbed to pitchers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale of
the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
In 1969
Minnesota captured the division title under the stormy leadership
of first-year manager Billy Martin. Killebrew provided the offensive
power and won the AL most valuable player (MVP) award. Rod Carew
captured the first of his seven batting titles, Oliva led the AL
in hits and doubles, and pitchers Dave Boswell and Jim Perry each
won 20 games. Despite solid hitting and pitching by the Twins, the
Baltimore Orioles swept the AL Championship Series (ALCS). Minnesota
returned to the playoffs in 1970 behind Perry, whose 24-12 win-loss
record earned him the Cy Young Award, but the Twins were once again
swept in the ALCS by the Orioles.
Minnesota’s
third base coach, Tom Kelly, became manager in 1986 and turned the
Twins into World Series champions in 1987. Outfielders Tom Brunansky
and Kirby Puckett, first baseman Kent Hrbek, and third baseman Gary
Gaetti each hit at least 28 home runs that year, while Frank Viola,
Bert Blyleven, and reliever Jeff Reardon led a strong pitching staff.
Minnesota upset the Detroit Tigers in the ALCS and went on to defeat
the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. Kelly was named AL
manager of the year.
Although
Minnesota finished last in 1990, pitchers Scott Erickson and Jack
Morris helped turn the team around in 1991, taking the Twins to
another AL pennant. Kelly again earned top managing honors as Minnesota
defeated the Atlanta Braves in the 1991 World Series. However, the
Twins struggled during most of the remainder of the 1990s.

Twins' Nathan to miss season with elbow injury (AP)Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan will miss the 2010 season because of a right elbow injury that will require surgery. Nathan, who leads the major leagues with 246 saves since 2004, made the decision after playing catch with Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson for 10 minutes on Sunday. "It didn't go like we hoped," Nathan said.
Twins Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)<p>On the first day Jose Morales was able to swing a bat and throw a baseball after getting the cast removed from his surgically repaired right wrist earlier this spring, the backup catcher's shoulder tightened up and he had to put the bat away again.</p>
<p>The Twins had been perhaps overly optimistic in making any predictions that Morales would be ready for opening day, and manager Ron Gardenhire said this latest setback will make that all but impossible.</p>
<p>"He's not going to be able to throw for a while here, so that's another knock," Gardenhire said. "I would say that that makes it really, really tough (for him to be ready opening day)."</p> <p>Catching prospects Drew Butera and Wilson Ramos have been getting lots of game action this spring because Mauer hasn't been traveling,...
Spelling Nathan is a challenge for the Twins (Yahoo! Sports)If closer Joe Nathan is unable to pitch this season, Minnesota must sort through unappealing alternatives.
Rays C Navarro hurts leg during 6-2 loss to Twins (AP)Francisco Liriano outpitched Tampa Bay's David Price and the Minnesota Twins went on to a 6-2 exhibition victory Saturday that left the Rays grateful the outcome wasn't worse. Price gave up six straight hits in a four-run inning and 11 hits overall, but at least he left the field standing. The same could not be said about Rays catcher Dioner Navarro, who was taken off on a cart after a...
Santana struggles against Twins in Mets' 7-3 loss (AP)Johan Santana's outing against his former team elicited fond memories if not a positive result. Santana lasted 3 1-3 innings, allowing nine hits and five runs in the News York Mets' 7-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Friday. "I had a great time over there, great seasons over there," said Santana, who the Twins traded to New York following the 2007 season.

Thome homers to lead Twins to 5-4 win over Pirates (AP)Justin Morneau and Jim Thome returned to the lineup for the Minnesota Twins, each following four days of rest. Thome didn't take long to shake off the rust. He went 2 for 2 with his first home run in a Twins uniform and Minnesota defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 on Thursday. Morneau, who like Thome was resting a sore back, went 0 for 3 with a strikeout, while Joe Mauer went 0 for 3, lowering...
Rodriguez, Ruggiano help Rays beat Twins 5-2 (AP)While the Tampa Bay Rays got their first look at closer Rafael Soriano in Wednesday's 5-2 exhibition victory, the Minnesota Twins maintained some hope they might get to see their own closer, Joe Nathan, at some point. Once the game started, however, Sean Rodriguez closed most of that discussion with two more hits, two more runs and a spectacular diving catch for the Rays.
Knoblauch pleads guilty in assault case (AP)Former major league infielder Chuck Knoblauch has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault on his common-law wife. According to court records, Knoblauch entered his plea Tuesday in exchange for deferred-adjudication probation. Successful completion of his one-year probation could mean the conviction on the assault of a family member would be expunged from the record.
Mauer returns from absence, gets 2 hits for Twins (AP)Minnesota star Joe Mauer is hitting in March like, well, an MVP. Mauer got two hits in his return from a four-day absence Tuesday, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Twins 3-1. The 26-year-old catcher had been out while resting a sore right shoulder, the result of a stray foul tip. He said all along there was no reason for concern.

Varitek appears for Red Sox in 6-4 win vs. Twins (AP)Kevin Slowey threw three perfect innings for Minnesota. He was even happier to be pitching pain-free. Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis drove in fifth-inning runs for the Boston Red Sox in a 6-4 victory over the Twins on Sunday, after Slowey's strong start. After missing the last half of last season with a right wrist injury that required surgery, Slowey is plenty excited to be...
Happ impressive in Phillies' 5-4 win over Twins (AP)J.A. Happ pitched four shutout innings and non-roster player Cody Ransom hit a two-out, three-run home run in the seventh inning to lead the Phillies to a 5-4 come-from-behind win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. Happ didn't pitch long enough to earn the win, but increased his scoreless streak this spring to 8 1-3 innings.
Span and Twins agree to $16.5M, 5-year contract (AP)Center fielder Denard Span and the Minnesota Twins have agreed to a $16.5 million, five-year contract, a deal that includes a $9 million team option for 2015. Hardy, Hudson get acquainted (AP)Shortstop J.J. Hardy and second baseman Orlando Hudson, the Minnesota Twins' new double play combination, are getting acquainted in the infield. And even though they have yet to turn a double play in four exhibition games, both said they expect...
Mets-Twins game canceled because of rain (AP)Rain delayed Francisco Rodriguez's first batting practice session to batters this spring training.
