Phillies Information
Philadelphia
Phillies are one of two Major League Baseball franchises located
within the state of Pennsylvania. The other team in the state
is the Pittsburgh Pirates. Both teams play in the National League.
The old home
stadium of the Phillies was Veterans Stadium. Just next to the
location of this stadium they have their new arena known as Citizens
Bank Park. The park has a seating capacity of 43,500 fans. It
opened on April 9, 2004 and the first baseball game was played
on April 12th. It has natural grass and dirt playing field. Citizens
Bank Park is built on an area of 21 acres at a cost of $346 million.
Philadelphia
Phillies were begun as a franchise in 1883. The franchise was
known as the Philadelphia Blue Jays from 1943-1944. * The Phillies
have 7 Division Titles in there franchise history, making it to
the National League Championship Series in 6 of those postseasons.
As a franchise
the Phillies have made it to the World Series 5 times, and have
won once. Their one World Championship coming in 1980. BUY PHILLIES
TICKETS The Phillies started the season 20 games below .500 and
saw their manager get fired, and saw their best player be traded
away before the end of the season. Third basemen Scott Rolen was
traded to the St. Louis Cardinals shortly after the All-Star Break
when it became apparent that the team would not be able to keep
the star infielder. The Phillies finished the season with an 80-81
record, good enough for third place. The 2003 season would be
the teams last in Veterans Stadium, and expectations were high
after signing free agents Jim Thome, and alter Kevin Millwood.
However, the team would fail to meet these expectations going
86-76 and again missing the playoffs. The team would try to find
the missing ingredient to a Division Title by acquiring Billy
Wagner at the end of the season. Wagner would sit on the disabled
list twice during the 2004 season, and would only appear in 45
games as a closer. Other injuries hurt the Phillies chances, as
the team finished with the identical record as the season before
(86-76). Jim Thome hit 42 home runs and drove in 105 runs, making
his second year in Philadelphia a success.

If the Phillies do not re-sign right fielder Jayson Werth following the 2010 season, it appears they have a suitable replacement in Domonic Brown. The 22-year-old Brown had an impressive showing in his first appearance in major league camp.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Brown, recently rated the 15th-best prospect in the game by Baseball America, hit .417 (10-for-24) with two home runs and eight RBIs in 11 Grapefruit League games. Brown's biggest day was also his last in big-league camp.

He hit home runs in each of his first two at-bats March 16 against the Tigers, the first coming off ace Justin Verlander. Brown finished the day 3-for-3 with a walk. Following the game, Brown, who will likely begin the season at Class AA Reading, was reassigned to the Phillies' minor league...
Roy Halladay struggled for the first time this spring in the Philadelphia Phillies' 3-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. Halladay allowed three runs and six hits, all for extra bases, in five innings. The left-hander walked two batters, hit another with a pitch and had no strikeouts. Halladay gave up all three runs in the second.
Roy Halladay struggled for the first time this spring and the Detroit Tigers were able to take advantage. Halladay (1-1) allowed three runs and six hits, all for extra bases, in five innings of the Philadelphia Phillies' 3-0 loss to the Tigers on Saturday. The left-hander walked two batters, hit another with a pitch and had no strikeouts.
Dennis Sarfate gave up a single to John Mayberry Jr. with one out in the eighth inning for the Phillies' first hit, and the Baltimore Orioles beat Philadelphia 2-0 Friday night. Brian Matusz, Will Ohman, Jim Johnson preceded Sarfate. Ross Wolf pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to preserve the one-hitter. Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel was thankful he didn't see the Orioles record five more outs.
Philadelphia Phillies closer Brad Lidge gave up three hits and a run in an inning of work Thursday, and the right-hander was very encouraged with the results of his first action against live batters this spring. "My knee felt outstanding, and right now the main goal is to get my arm speed up to normal," Lidge said after throwing 16 pitches in a minor-league game at the Phillies'...
Jayson Werth hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to break open a tie game, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Yankees 6-2 on Wednesday. The home run was the second of the spring for Werth, a first-time All-Star last year who can become a free agent after this season. Werth, Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard all finished 2 for 3 and combined for three runs and four RBIs.
Ryan Howard hit his first home run of the spring and highly touted Domonic Brown connected twice, leading Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies over the Detroit Tigers 6-1 Tuesday. Hamels held the Tigers to an unearned run and two hits in five innings. He struck out four and walked none. Howard launched a two-run drive off Justin Verlander.
In a story March 15 about a spring training game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Pittsburgh Pirates, The Associated Press reported erroneously in the lead paragraph that the Pirates won the game. The Phillies won, 5-1.
Albert Pujols for Ryan Howard? Let's just say the MVP sluggers don't plan to pack their bags anytime soon. Talk of a megatrade kept baseball buzzing Monday following an ESPN report the Philadelphia Phillies were thinking about asking the St. Louis Cardinals if they'd like to swap star first basemen.
Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco sprained his right knee during Monday's 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Polanco was injured while trying to catch Delwyn Young's pop single that landed just behind the mound in the second inning. Polanco's right foot came down hard on the mound as he lost the ball in the sun, and he fell to the ground.
Jamie Moyer hit a rough patch in his latest outing for the Philadelphia Phillies, giving up five runs in three innings to Toronto in a 'B' game Monday. Moyer, the oldest player in the majors at 47, allowed eight hits. The first four Blue Jays batters got hits. Moyer and Kyle Kendrick were the favorites when camp opened to land the fifth and final spot in the rotation for the two-time NL...
Brian Matusz made the most of the opportunity to pitch against the defending National League champions. On Sunday, Matusz gave up three hits and a run in his five innings -- the longest and most effective outing by an Orioles starter this spring -- in Baltimore's 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

J.A. Happ pitched four shutout innings and non-roster player Cody Ransom hit a two-out, three-run home run in the seventh inning to lead the Phillies to a 5-4 come-from-behind win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. Happ didn't pitch long enough to earn the win, but increased his scoreless streak this spring to 8 1-3 innings.
The Philadelphia Phillies-Tampa Bay Rays spring training game has been canceled because of rain. Friday's cancellation means Tampa Bay's franchise-record streak of nine straight exhibition wins will remain intact at least another day. The Rays are scheduled to host the Florida Marlins in Port Charlotte on Saturday.
Rain has forced the cancellation of the Philadelphia Phillies-Detroit Tigers exhibition game. Jeremy Bonderman and Nate Robertson were scheduled to pitch for the Tigers and Drew Naylor for Philadelphia's split squad. The Phillies' other scheduled game against the Tampa Bay Rays in Port Charlotte also has been rained out.
Joe Blanton used a mix of fastballs and changeups to shut down the Detroit Tigers, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-0 victory Thursday. Blanton has focused solely on the fastball-changeup combination in his first two spring starts before he incorporates breaking pitches into his repertoire. So far the results have been promising: Blanton held the Tigers to three singles in four innings of...
