Information
2002 Season-The
Padres featured a very young and talented team in 2002, but injuries
hurt them all year long. The Padres finished the season in last
place with a 66-96 record. 2003 Season- The 2003 season started
off on the wrong foot, with their top hitter Phil Nevin, and their
top pitcher Trevor Hoffman beginning the season injured and they
stayed that way for most of the season.
The Padres
finished in last place with a 64-98 record but they had reason
to be optimistic for 2004, where they would be moving to a new
stadium and they had recently acquired standout outfielder Brian
Giles from the Pittsburgh Pirates. 2004-Season- The Padres had
a better, healthier team in 2004 and had a chance to win the NL
West. They finished the season 87-75, 6 games out of first place.
The team had two pitchers to finish with 15 wins, and Trevor Hoffman
had 40+ saves. The 2004 season gave the Padres a lot of optimism
for 2005.

When the Padres first started talking about being a buyer as the trading deadline approached, the word was that they would seek an outfielder or another starting pitcher.

Then second baseman David Eckstein went on the disabled list July 21 with his second right calf strain in a span of three weeks.

Suddenly the Padres' trade focus switched to the infield. If Eckstein were going to be lost for an extended period of time, or if his injury were to occur again, the Padres were really weak in the infield. Struggling shortstop Everth Cabrera has again slipped under .200. And with Eckstein out, the backup infielder is right-handed pinch hitter Oscar Salazar.

A club official said the Padres weren't going to win the National League West with Cabrera at shortstop.
Oscar Salazar's single in the bottom of the ninth gave the National League West-leading San Diego Padres a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday. The Padres took two of three games in the series, opening a seven-game gap between them. The California rivals will meet again in a four-game series at Dodger Stadium starting Monday.
Roy Oswalt granted his own wish: He's now part of a pennant race. Miguel Tejada, Jorge Cantu and Matt Capps joined the mix, too. The trade wheel of fortune kept spinning Thursday with veterans-for-prospects deals that typically dot the stretch run. More swaps were expected before Saturday's 4 p.m.
Miguel Tejada is coming to San Diego, and his new teammates can't wait to get him in the lineup. The NL West-leading Padres obtained the 36-year-old Tejada and more than $1.15 million from the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, convinced that he can help them in the infield and at the plate. The Padres gave up Double-A right-hander Wynn Pelzer to get Tejada, who is expected to be in uniform on...

The San Diego Padres are no longer a surprise to Joe Torre and the Los Angeles Dodgers. "We've been past that point, in my mind," Torre said after watching Oscar Salazar deliver a pinch-hit single with one out in the ninth inning to give the NL West-leading Padres a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers on Thursday to take two of three games.
As Adrian Gonzalez's at-bat dragged on, Tony Gwynn Jr. stood on second base, constantly checking out how deep center fielder Matt Kemp was playing. When Gonzalez hit a bloop one-out single that fell in just in front of Kemp, Gwynn took off for home, sparking the NL West-leading San Diego Padres to a 6-1 win over the rival Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night.
The San Diego Padres say left fielder Kyle Blanks will have reconstructive surgery on his right elbow, which could sideline him into next season. Surgery is scheduled for Friday. Blanks was placed on the disabled list May 20, retroactive to May 18, with a strained elbow. He was the opening day starter and was hitting .157 before the injury.
Andre Ethier was too sick to start in right field for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He felt good enough to pinch-hit, though. Ethier delivered a clutch two-run single with two outs in the seventh inning off Jon Garland to give the Dodgers a 2-0 win over the NL West-leading San Diego Padres on Tuesday night, the first of seven games between the division rivals in 10 days.

PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Rays finally wound up on the right side of a memorable pitching performance.

SAN FRANCISCO - Dan Uggla and Mike Stanton each hit solo homers and the Florida Marlins moved above the .500 mark for the first time since early June with a 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.
The Tampa Bay Rays finally wound up on the right side of a memorable pitching performance as Matt Garza's no-hitter highlighted an eventful evening of American League baseball.
Matt Garza pitched the first no-hitter in Tampa Bay Rays history, and the fifth in the major leagues this season, in a 5-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday. Garza faced the minimum 27 batters, allowing only a second-inning walk, for a team that's often been on the wrong end of pitching gems lately.
Two years after the Pirates won 67 games and the Padres won only 63, the opposite-coast franchises possess the National League's two lowest payrolls. On the field, they don't begin to resemble each other. Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Denorfia homered, Wade LeBlanc won for the first time in six weeks and first-place San Diego finished off its only series sweep in Pittsburgh since 1998, beating...
Opponents should know this by now: Give these San Diego Padres any opening with a mistake, an error, a walk or a balk and they'll take advantage. Extra-base hits are optional. Mat Latos pitched effectively over six innings despite giving up two solo home runs in his first start since July 8 and the division-leading Padres won for the seventh time in nine games, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates...
Sounds so easy and, often enough for the surprising San Diego Padres, it is exactly that. Get the lead early and then let the bullpen finish it late. Aaron Cunningham's triple started San Diego on a four-run second inning and the first-place Padres again took advantage of an early lead and their strong bullpen to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 on Friday night.
