Six weeks after the Nationals brought Stephen Strasburg to the major leagues, they had to do what they'd hoped to avoid by taking such a cautious route with him: They put him on the disabled list.

Strasburg, who was scratched from his start Tuesday with shoulder inflammation, is only expected to be out for 15 days, as the team gives its prized rookie time to rest his shoulder. He will travel with the team on its upcoming trip to the West Coast and could come back Aug. 6, when he was scheduled to pitch against the Dodgers, but manager Jim Riggleman said it's likely the Nationals will wait a few days after that.

Riggleman also said that if Strasburg is feeling any pain the rest of the season, he won't pitch.
Roy Oswalt granted his own wish: He's now part of a pennant race. Miguel Tejada, Jorge Cantu and Matt Capps joined the mix, too. The trade wheel of fortune kept spinning Thursday with veterans-for-prospects deals that typically dot the stretch run. More swaps were expected before Saturday's 4 p.m.

Anibal Sanchez pitched a one-hitter for his first shutout since a no-hitter in September 2006, and Jorge Cantu played his final game for Florida in the Marlins' 5-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday. Sanchez (8-6) retired his first 13 batters and matched a career-high with eight strikeouts.
Former major leaguer Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez has made his minor league debut for the Washington Nationals' team in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League. The 44-year-old Hernandez gave up one run and two hits in one inning for the GCL Nationals in their 3-2 victory over the Marlins' affiliate Thursday.
Chipper Jones can think of one thing that might stem the struggles his Braves are going through at the moment. "Get us back to Atlanta. Please. At some point soon," Jones said. "The road has been our nemesis all year. We haven't swung the bat or we haven't pitched. That trend continues." Sorry, Chipper: Your team's current road trip lasts another three games, with...
Here's guessing the real Miss Iowa will not be booed when she takes the mound at Nationals Park. Pageant winner Katherine Connors accepted an invitation to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Washington's home game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night, a few days after Nationals pitcher Miguel Batista made reference to Miss Iowa as part of a self-effacing joke.

When Braves rookie Jason Heyward swiped home on the front end of a double steal with Brian McCann in the first inning of a 3-1 victory over the Nationals on Wednesday night, the event was so rare, so made-up-on-the-spot, no one involved quite knew what to make of it. "You're not going to see a lot of it," Heyward said.
Most of his teammates already were out on the field for batting practice when Stephen Strasburg wandered into the home clubhouse at Nationals Park on Wednesday. Shut down for at least two days -- and perhaps three or four -- because of a stiff pitching shoulder, Strasburg did not need to hurry to put on his uniform.
