The city
of Cleveland has one of the oldest baseball traditions in the
country. Professional baseball started in Cleveland in 1869 when
the Red Stockings played Forest City. The city was part of the
first professional league called the National Association in 1971,
although that league only lasted one year.
The city
was also represented in the National League in 1879. The franchise
now known as the Indians began as the Cleveland Blues in 1901
as a member of the American League.
They soon
became known as the Naps from 1903-1914 due to their star player
Napoleon Lajoie, before he went to Philadelphia. They were also
briefly known as the Spiders and the Broncos before settling on
the Indians in 1915.
In 1947 the
Indians were the first American League team to break the color
barrier when they hired Larry Doby, the first black man to play
in the junior circuit. Over the years the Indians have enjoyed
a variety of great players such as Stan Coveleski, Bob Feller,
Nap Lajoie, Bob Lemon, Satchel Paige, Gaylord Perry, Frank Robinson,
Tris Speaker, and CY Young. The Indians have had an roller coast
existence. They won the World Series in 1920 and 1948, but have
also gone 40 years without winning the American League Pennant
from 1954 to 1995. Recently they have won the American League
Central Division title from 1995 to 2001.
Kerry Wood says he's not worried about missing any more time with the Cleveland Indians because of a sore back. The veteran closer did not pitch as scheduled Saturday, but said his achy upper right back would not have kept him from pitching in a regular-season game. "It's a little sore around the lat and spring training is not the time to go out and push it," Wood said after...

Russell Branyan's spring debut didn't take place as scheduled because the veteran left-handed hitter was still working his legs back into shape after a winter of rehab on his back.

Signed to a one-year, $2 million contract as a free agent, Branyan is expected to be the Indians' everyday first baseman. However, with Seattle last year Branyan missed most of the last month of the season because of a herniated disk. He spent most of the offseason trying to strengthen his back.

Indians officials had targeted March 10 as the day Branyan would play in his first spring training game, but Branyan was scratched from the lineup that day because the Indians didn't think he was ready physically.

Club officials say Branyan's back is fine; it's his legs he needs to get into shape.
The Cleveland Indians lost a game and may not have Kerry Wood for at least a few days either. Brandon McCarthy pitched three scoreless innings for the Texas Rangers in a 5-0 win over the Indians, who had won five in a row and played two ties so far this spring. Wood was scheduled to pitch, but was unavailable on Saturday.
Cleveland Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is day-to-day with a strained left groin. Cabrera was not available for the Indians' game against the Texas Rangers on Saturday. "It's just going to be a couple of days, it is no big deal," Cabrera said in the Indians clubhouse. He was injured diving back to third base on a pickoff attempt in the fourth inning Friday against the Los...
Fausto Carmona showed good command while pitching three scoreless innings Friday. Joe Smith wasn't so sharp. Carmona allowed just one hit during his impressive outing but the Cleveland Indians blew a three-run lead in the ninth against a Los Angeles Angels split-squad. The Indians failed to score in their half of the ninth and the game ended in a 7-7 tie.
Twitter sensation Ozzie Guillen's plan for his own Web site was nixed by the White Sox front office, Guillen said Thursday. No problem for the Chicago manager, who said he just wanted to have another forum through which to have fun. Guillen spoke on the Web site matter after the White Sox and Cleveland Indians called off their exhibition game Thursday with the scored tied at 5 after 10 innings.

Peralta says he's still a shortstop at heart. With some other headstrong, ego-driven player, that difference of opinion could be a huge problem, but Peralta is one of the most easygoing players in the game. He says he'll do his best to play alongside new shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and make it work.

Four Dominican Summer League players, including a pair of New York Yankees prospects, have been suspended for the first 50 games of the season following positive tests for steroids under baseball's minor league drug program. Yankees pitcher Israel Tolentino and catcher Josue Rodriguez were penalized along with New York Mets pitcher Melvin Colon and Cleveland Indians outfielder Steven Lebron.
Cleveland Indians rookie Jordan Brown has had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Brown tore the medial meniscus in the knee during outfield drills Friday before the Indians' first exhibition game. Surgery to repair it was done by Dr. Rick Parker at the Cleveland Clinic on Wednesday. Brown, a 26-year-old first baseman/outfielder, will need four to eight weeks of rehabilitation.
Jason Vargas is doing everything he can to win a spot in Seattle's rotation. Vargas pitched into the fourth inning in the Mariners' 6-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday, putting together another impressive outing. Vargas, one of four candidates for the No. 5 starter role, allowed two hits, walked one and struck out one in 3 2-3 scoreless innings.

Jake Westbrook will have to wait at least another day to make his much-anticipated spring debut for the Cleveland Indians. The right-hander's scheduled start against the Texas Rangers was canceled by rain on Sunday. The Rangers did not even make the short bus trip from their training camp in Surprise, Ariz., as a steady rain fell throughout the Phoenix area.

"Another well-pitched ballgame makes us happy," Acta said "That's what we're trying...

Spring training is over for Cleveland Indians veteran Jason Grilli and rookie Jordan Brown. Brown will have arthroscopic surgery early next week in Cleveland to repair a torn medial meniscus in his right knee, trainer Lonnie Soloff said Saturday. Grilli is seeking a second opinion on an injury to his right quadriceps.
Asdrubal Cabrera led off Cleveland's spring training opener with a homer, providing immediate evidence that the Indians' new manager might be onto something. Batting in Grady Sizemore's accustomed spot, Cabrera got the Indians rolling with his drive off Mike Lincoln on Friday. An inning later, Sizemore came through with a bases-loaded double in a 9-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
Manny Acta was ready for his first game as Cleveland Indians' manager even before he took the job. "I'm excited," the Indians new manager said Thursday after putting players through a brisk two-hour workout under the warm Arizona sun. "I'm eager because of what I've seen from the players in practice.
