Jays Information
- Toronto is
added to the list of Major League cities in 1976 as the expansion
team the Blue Jays is started. The first game in Toronto was won
by the Blue Jays on April 7th, 1977 as they outscored the White
Sox 9-5 in the snow at Exhibition Stadium.
- The name
the Blue Jays was selected through a “Name the Team”
contest in which there were 30,000 entries.
- Despite losing
107 games in their first season the Blue Jays attracted 1,701,052
fans setting a new record for attendance to an exhibition team.
- The Blue
Jays won back to back World Series Championships in 1992 and 1993
defeating the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.
- The Jays
played in Exhibition Stadium from 1977 to 1988 before the move
to the Skydome occurred in time for the 1989 season. Buy Blue
Jays Tickets Over the All-Star break of 2002 the Blue Jays were
looking at a record of 34-52. Needing to do something to get the
season on the right track manager Buck Martinez was replaced by
Carlos Tosca. The Blue Jays did turn the season around going 43-32
in the 2nd half of the season and winning 16 of their last 20
games and ending the season in 3rd place in the AL East. Rookie
of the Year Eric Hinske and Josh Phelps helped pull the Jays back
into the swing of things with Phelps batting in 58 RBIs in just
74 games after being brought up from the minors. Roy Halladay
also had a great season on the mound with 19 wins and 7 losses
as he represented the Jays in the All-Star Game. April 2003 proved
to be a struggle for the Jays as they post a 10-18 record. Fortunately
on May 1st Roy Halladay records his first win of the season sparking
the Blue Jays to win 21 of 29 games in May. That win was the 1st
of 15 straight for Halladay as he and the rest of the team were
on a roll. Carlos Delgado was on record setting pace for RBIs
at the All-Star Break with 97. The Jays finished the season strong
after a slight slump after the break. Halladay finished with a
22-7 record earning him a Cy Young. Meanwhile Delgado finishes
2nd in AL MVP voting behind Alex Rodriguez of the Texas Rangers
as he records 42 homeruns and 145 RBIs. 2004 was a year of rebuilding
for the Blue Jays. The Jays struggled all season as injuries to
key players plagued the team. After getting swept in the first
series of the year things looked bleak from the eyes of Toronto
fans. Even in May after Frank Catalanotto’s six-hit night
the losses kept piling up. After Josh Phelps was traded mid season
many call-ups from the minors brought in some needed youth. In
a December off season move the Jays released Carlos Delgado and
signed Corey Koskie to a three-year deal. With large roster changes
put into action the Jays hope they can turn it around for 2005
and try to recreate their days in the early 90’s.

Life after Doc is fraught with uncertainty (Yahoo! Sports)Roy Halladay is gone and the Blue Jays are left with a pitching staff of the inexperienced, inconsistent and infirm.
Blue Jays Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)<p>The Blue Jays still haven't given up hope that Dustin McGowan, who missed all of 2009 because of shoulder and knee surgery, will be ready by the start of the season.</p>
<p>"It's too early to tell, but there is a scenario that he could (be with the team opening day)," general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "If he continues to progress well, potentially he could work his way to being a starter for us, but we have to see how he does, how deep he gets into (spring training) games.</p>
<p>"But the opening-day date is not something that we've targeted specifically. It's more when his arm is ready to go. We're not in a rush."</p>
<p>It's doubtful, though not impossible, that McGowan would be ready by the date of the opener, April 5.
Blue Jays hit Guthrie hard in 13-3 rout of Orioles (AP)For Baltimore right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, this spring is looking very much like last year's, just as his performance Thursday looked a lot like his previous one. Guthrie gave up three of Toronto's six home runs, including two by Travis Snider, as the Blue Jays battered Baltimore 13-3. Guthrie was tagged for seven runs in three innings, not far different from the four runs on eight hits the...
Tallet allows one hit over four innings, strikes out three as Jays top Orioles (The Canadian Press)SARASOTA, Fla. - Left-hander Brian Tallet allowed one hit over four innings, a leadoff single by Cesar Izturis in the first, and retired the last 12 batters he faced to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 4-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.
Tallet shuts down Orioles in Blue Jays' 4-1 win (AP)Left-hander Brian Tallet allowed one hit over four innings, a leadoff single by Cesar Izturis in the first, and retired the last 12 batters he faced to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 4-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. Travis Snider hit a solo home run off reliever Kam Mickolio in the fifth to help the Blue Jays win for only the second time in six games.
Tigers top Jays for 10-7 victory (AP)Armando Galarraga is not overly concerned with his slow start this spring. Galarraga allowed three runs, all earned in three innings while the Tigers topped the Toronto Blue Jays 10-7 on Monday. His spring training ERA jumped to 11.57. "They got some hits, but they were mostly ground balls that found holes," Galarraga said.

Thurston homers, Braves beat Blue Jays 8-5 (AP)Jason Frasor conceded he was stubborn on the mound Sunday against the Atlanta Braves. That explains why they pounded the Toronto relief pitcher for four runs in 1-3 of an inning in an 8-5 victory over the Blue Jays. "The changeup was terrible; the fastball was good," said Frasor, a candidate for the Blue Jays' closer role.
Jays GM won't deny interest in Cuban SS (AP)Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos wouldn't deny he's interested in Cuban defector Adeinis Hechavarria, but he declined to comment on a published report that the team might be close to signing the shortstop for $10 million. The New York Post reported Sunday the Jays were closing in on the talented 21-year-old prospect.
Toronto RHP Dustin McGowan pitches simulated game (AP)Toronto right-hander Dustin McGowan has pitched his second simulated game, throwing 44 pitches over two innings. Barring any right shoulder soreness in the next two days, he expects to throw 50-60 pitches Friday in a game against Blue Jays minor leaguers. McGowan last pitched in a regular-season game July 8, 2008, before undergoing shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum.

Romero throws 4 scoreless in Jays' win (AP)Ricky Romero had another strong start on Saturday, pitching four shutout innings and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-0. It wasn't perfect for Romero who struck out four, but also walked four under windy conditions, but he said the key was that he was able to pitch out of jams.
McDonald plays role of sage for young Blue Jays (AP)Becoming a coach isn't on John McDonald's radar just yet, but while he's playing he enjoys being a mentor to his fellow Toronto Blue Jays infielders. "I would hope the younger players would use a player like me as a source of knowledge," said the 35-year-old McDonald, primarily a shortstop who has spent parts of 11 major league seasons between Cleveland and Toronto, plus a...

Sonnanstine sharp as Rays beat Blue Jays 4-1 (AP)A relaxed Andy Sonnanstine gave the Tampa Bay Rays a glimpse of the pitcher that helped them get to the World Series. The right-hander, who lost his spot in the starting rotation last season after helping the Rays win the AL pennant in 2008, pitched four scoreless innings in Thursday's 4-1 split-squad victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Drabek pitches well for Blue Jays in loss to Phils (AP)Kyle Drabek, the pitcher the Toronto Blue Jays coveted and finally got in the trade that sent ace Roy Halladay to Philadelphia, tried to treat Wednesday's start against the Phillies like any other game. It was good advice from his father, 1990 National League Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek. The result: two scoreless innings, one walk and one hit allowed in the Phillies' 4-2 victory.

Toronto's Cecil to make spring debut Wednesday (AP)Blue Jays left-hander Brett Cecil says he will make his spring debut Wednesday, one week after he cut his left thumb while "chopping up chickens." Cecil says he will pitch against the Phillies when they travel to Dunedin, Fla., to face Toronto. Cecil went 7-4 with a 5.30 ERA in 18 games, 17 starts, last year as a rookie and is trying to earn a spot in the Blue Jays' rotation.
